Iraqi artist Saman Hidayat and his wife came to Monheim am Rhein in 2015 to find safety. In Iraq, Hidayat headed the Institute of Fine Arts in Erbil.
Since 2015, Hidayat has been living in Monheim am Rhein. He was so grateful for the home he was given that he created the sculpture "Scream for Freedom" for the city, foregoing his compensation. The sculpture was specially made for the Baumberger Chaussee / Knipprather Straße roundabout.
It is a sysmbol of flight and displacement, but at the same time represents finding refuge, freedom and the hope for peace. The sculpture depicts an emotional moment: the joyful mother is standing behind the kneeling father, who is holding the child tightly in his arms.
