Everyone here in Monheim am Rhein wants more for our town. We offer the possibilities, and everyone is dedicated to the cause: we want to make Monheim an even better, even more attractive place, where people enjoy great quality of life. This is what we are committed to in Monheim am Rhein, and this is what makes it "BESONDERS" - a special place, in so many ways.
Monheim am Rhein is where we feel at home. Idyllically located on the Rhine, surrounded by nature, with a cozy historical old town and plenty of cultural events and leisure activities to choose from. As the Children's Capital, we don't just pay lip service to our claim of being a family-friendly town in Monheim am Rhein. And when you celebrate Carnival, summer festivals or the festive Advent season here, that is when you will experience the feeling of being truly at home.
We in Monheim am Rhein know very well that companies have no time to waste. While other cities may take six months to issue a building permit, we take no more than five weeks. The lowest local trade tax factor in all of North Rhine-Westphalia has helped boost Monheim am Rhein as a business location, with an increasing number of companies setting up business in Monheim every year. Our service-minded Economic Development Department knows that this is how you create jobs and make a city more attractive and dynamic.
In Monheim am Rhein, we know that children are our future – and need an ideal start to life. That's why Monheim is the "Children's Capital." Our goal is to offer every child, every adolescent and every family the best possible opportunities for their future. With free-of-charge childcare for pre-schoolers and school children or the free-of-charge use of musical instruments in primary schools. Monheim founded the Ulla Hahn House as a center to promote reading and writing skills and an art school for all, and every child in Monheim is involved in at least three of its projects by the time they grow up. An attractive skatepark, over 70 playgrounds including a water and adventure play park at Rheinbogen Landscape Park, and museums that provide a real experience prove how seriously we take youngsters' and families' needs. So do our well-equipped schools and kindergartens.
We do things a bit differently in Monheim. We don't just maintain the status quo. We strive to make our city more appealing, more attractive and more livable every day. We invest consistently in expanding the infrastructure, we refurbish the buildings in our pretty old town, redevelop the city center, set up spectacular artwork in public places, and have created a top-class multifunctional arena with the K714 event hall, located just around the corner from our pier. We have built a new Health Campus, we keep creating new affordable housing through the City's housing subsidiary Monheimer Wohnen, and are redesigning the Rhine waterfront with steps to sit on and enjoy a wide view of the river. We are making Monheim better for its residents, local companies and our visitors.
Welcome, diversity! In Monheim am Rhein, everyone is welcome. And we want everyone to be able to actively take part in life. We are a town that embraces diversity. We feel that everyone is different and has a different contribution to make, and that other cultures enrich our community. We don't say no to mosques, and are improving disabled access in many areas. Our diversity is what unites us and what sets us apart.
Explore how much there is to discover. Every year, we welcome more guests to Monheim am Rhein. Which comes as no surprise: There is so much to discover here! The former Roman fort and UNESCO World Heritage Site Haus Bürgel, St. Mary's Chapel, the town's interactive Mon-Chronik museum, spread across seven historic sites, a nature discovery trail and so much more. Such as the cafés and bars in the cozy old town, where every guest has to decide for themselves which type of beer they prefer: the so-called "beer equator" runs through Monheim, marking the imaginary line between the regions where Kölsch beer or Alt beer is preferred. Worth seeing, worth experiencing, worth enjoying!
In Monheim am Rhein, the digital future starts today. That is why we supplied every citizen of Monheim who provided access to their building with an extra fast internet connection – across the whole city! Thousands of kilometers of fiber-optic cable were laid, and hotspots for free-of-charge WiFi directly connected to it. We are also the first town to operate a fleet of five autonomous buses that circulate among the regular traffic. And on top, we introduced the first digital card for citizens, the Monheim Pass, which functions as a free public transport pass across the whole city and as a digital membership card for the town library. With innovative projects such as the new smart street lighting system, lighting can be managed according to needs. Tablet-supported teaching in schools makes sure that even children are working with the best-possible connections.
