The Top 10 must-see sights in Monheim am Rhein

The Schelmenturm (Rogue's Tower), a city landmark, was built around 600 years ago as part of the last fortification of Monheim am Rhein. The tower's name still testifies to its purpose in the past: pilferers, scoundrels and rogues werde imprisoned here.

Today, the tower is part of the guided city tours and the interactive museum MonChronik App. Concerts, carnival celebrations and other events also take place in the tower from time to time. 

The Marienburg is a stately manor in Monheim, built in 1897 and 1880 as a summer home for Cologne lawyer and politician Eugen von Kesseler. 

Today, the manor serves as a congress centre and is also a popular wedding location. The adjoining Marienburg Park is part of the national garden art road.

At Haus Bürgel, an ancient roman fort north of Baumberg, you find a Roman museum with founds from archeological excavations, a Biological station as well as a riding stable with Rhenisch-German draft horses. 

The Urdenbacher Kämpe is a stretch of landscape where nature has been untouched and the Rhine still floods the meadows. The result is a unique wetland with a hugely diverse flora and fauna.

The Rheinbogen landscape park is a recreation area situated at the bottom of the old city with a nature discovery trail, bycicle rental, a skater park and a fun water playground.

Monheim's old town is both the starting point for numerous tourist activities and the town's social and gastronomic hub. A number of guided city tours start from here to take you on delightful explorations. For those more inclined to stand and stare, there are many restaurants, pubs and beer gardens where you can sit and watch the world go by.

In the gateway arch of Spielmann's traditional pub, the city's Carnival Museum occupies 40 square meters, offering interested citizens and visitors a delightful insight into aspects of fondly cherished traditional Rhenish customs with the help of a living manuscript and an exhibition of carnivalists' "jeck" (foolish) items.

St. Mary's Chapel is a landmark of Monheim am Rhein that can be seen from a great distance. Rhine boatmen built a wooden chapel in 1418, which was replaced in 1514 by a late gothic stone-built chapel. St. Mary's Chapel is one of the oldest places of pilgrimage in the Archdiocese of Cologne with a unique position on the Rhine

The Rhine Promenade is one of Monheim's touristic and cultural highlights. A viewing platform offering a view of the MonBerg (the man-made mountain), the landing stage as well as unusual works of art like the Leda statue and the geyser make it definitely worth a visit.

Since February 26, 2020, five almost fully autonomous electric buses have exclusively served the route between the bus station and the old part of town. The journeys run as normal, in flowing traffic, and can be used every day from 7 a.m. to midnight with the usual public transport tickets. This combination does not exist anywhere else in Germany and, at present, anywhere else in Europe either.
